So: apparently we were all stoned in the 80's. At least that's the impression I got by watching this commercial
Retro Junk - Milk, It Does the Body Good: "This milk commercial features a neon cow and a bunch of kids having one hell of a good time drinking milk."

As well, on ITunes, I just listened to Crystal Method, Trip Like I Do. Link Comment if you recognize what Henson movie the words come from.
EverBabe - This combines your two current loves: statistics and real estate. (good luck with the house) Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner - William Morrow, 2005: "A big part of a real-estate agent's job, it would seem, is to persuade the homeowner to sell for less than he would like while at the same time letting potential buyers know that a house can be bought for less than its listing price. To be sure, there are more subtle means of doing so than coming right out and telling the buyer to bid low. "

So:

I was just accused, by a coworker I like *and* respect, of Q-boppin. I informed her that I had *never* been accused of such a thing, and her mother would be ashamed of her language, and that she should really apologize for her harsh words.

Then (after an appropriate amount of time had gone by,) I asked her what Q-boppin meant.

....oh, CUBE-hopping. I do *that* all the time. Grin.
While expoloring the possiblities of RSS feeds (more to follow re: this later,) I came upon a link to Google Suggests - a way for google to not only complete your data request, but tell you how many other people have successfully searched for the same information. It r0x0rs.
From there, I came across this: style.org > Estimating the Airspeed Velocity of an Unladen Swallow

The most interesting thing is: these guys were NOT the winners.

This is really not a funny story, but - this guy is described as a 'former drama major.' I guess that's *one* reason to join the drama club.
The following is a story that should be read by all germaphobes & parents of small children (EverBabe- that's you.)

If you've noticed all of the recent links here, it's cause of the "blog this" button on the Google toolbar. It's pretty cool, a way to automatically send (mostly) cool links directly to the blog, without even really trying very hard. Yay!

This next link in is direct response to Suzi's post about death & dying. Link to Suzi's post Suz: the one thing I didn't see you mention was the hypocrisy of Delay and Bush with respect to this issue, specifically as it relates to the laws they have signed. Link to stolen article from Digby

It really all (if not all, then a lot of it) boils down to money. Which is fine, in a world of limited resources, we all can't have everything, and money is the best way that we've come up with to determine how to distribute those resources. But comments like "valuing the culture of life' are disingenous. Once we've agreed that it's about 'protecting money', and not 'protecting life,' we can begin to have the real conversation.

It's like the old joke:
: Man to beautiful woman in bar: Will you sleep with me for a million dollars?
: Beautiful woman: Of course.
: Man: Will you sleep with me for a dollar?
: Beautiful woman: Of course not. What do you think I am-some kind of whore?
: Man: We've already established that. We're now just negotiating price.

Alrighty: tell me that this isn't just about the most depressing thing you've ever read.
The survey of more than 1,500 adults found that 87 percent usually watched TV in the hour before going to bed, 47 percent usually had sex and 64 percent read.
Maybe it's just bad phrasing on their part, but I don't know... 47% *usually* had sex? Sheesh.

Mom, Brian, Heather, and niece Emma came into town for Easter. We had dinner here with Ogre, his wife A, Heather's mom, and A Saturday night. I made a very nice Shrimp Scampi, if I do say so myself! Only problem we had was the leak in the roof. (of new house! Boo!) Could have been the wind. Lot of wind & rain. Biblical flood time. Arond 2 inches of rain, but most of it horizontal. 24 mph wind gusts.

EverBabe: As soon as your momma leaves, and you have a chance, read this diatribe about olives. Link to Funny Jason Mraz journal entry

At one point, he calls them "chubby little vinegar-pea"s. Heh.

I suppose, fair reader, that even were one *not* EverBabe, it might be worth reading. PS - if a fair amount of time has gone by since I originally posted this, it's the journal entry for Tuesday, March 22.
From Red, who's temporarily working at a local county governmental office:

...Apparently we are SUPER lucky in terms of cube noise at our work because there is this lady with the MOST annoying laugh that I have ever heard (I'll have to demonstrate when I see you next). But WORSE than this laugh is what I heard in the cube next to me. I'm working away and I hear this deep voice talking into the phone next to me, "Hey baby, did you call me?", "It's weird, it said that you called twice but I didn't get your messages.", "Yeah baby, something must not be working.", "I can't wait to see you baby."...then in a slightly lowered voice (and it almost makes me puke writing this:) "You are so sexy baby, yeah you are so sexy."

THIS IS LIKE A 60 YEAR OLD MAN!!!! EWWWWW!!!!
We clearly are going to have to send Red to diversity training, as our seniors can still have active sex lives! (OK, now *I* threw up in my mouth a little...)

Email edited to protect Frank McSkeezy's actual identity.
Quick update:

Spring is here! As I always used to say: "I like spring the best because of all the scenery.' (and then I would leer at a cute girl walking by.) (remember, this was in the days when me leering at cute girls was merely annoying, and not harassment.)

I was walking behind some scenery on the way into work this morning, and lo, she spoke to me! "Days like this make it hard to go into work!" I agreed, made an insipid comment about "at least i'll be able to sit near someone with a window," and we continued our conversation on our (too short!) trip up the elevator.

I do loves me some spring.

This is a copy of the 'paper' version of my blog that I kept when I was staying at Zelda's house. Before moving in to this place and getting broadband, I had to make do with paper & pencil, like a savage. While at EverBabe's house right before moving, I checked my email and found one from... well, why don't you just read for yourself?
Wow - Just heard from ANOTHER blast from the past. We'll call her Suz. (My attempts to cleverly protect the innocent have failed to this point, as Red came by the other day and said: "Who's EverBabe? Jody?" On the other hand, Jody tends to out herself on SeanJr's - I mean, Connor's webpage.
Anyhoo, Suz sent out a {ping} to see if I was still alive. I'm glad I was at EB's house, cause with her help I was able to successfully edit the following line from my response: "Wow it's been almost 10 years, long enough for one of use to get fat and/or bald. Don't worry - it's me." Thanks again, EB, for helping save me from myself, although as {ping} responses go, I've seen better.

Looks like I didn't really get into how giddy I was to hear from her; we've been able to talk a few times, and I've loved it. Note my attempt to put up a link to her site on the right hand side of the page. She's just bought a horse, and there may be pictures on her site. Go ahead and look - I won't mind.
Wow.

Living in a new place is weird. Weirdest of all is finally unpacking all of those boxes, some of which have been packed since 1998, or before.

After the blast from the past (see above entry,) and with all of the introspection caused by singing with Greg's last big concert, I've been thinking a lot about those old Choral days. (well, I've been thinking about many days, both pre and post Choral... but those Choral days were some of my best so far.) I even brought out my best 'embarassing choral story' at dinner tonight; you know, the one where you fall asleep at a concert? One that you are singing in? When you are sitting behind the soloist who is performing? And it's being videotaped? What, that never happened to *you*? Oh. Me neither.

So tonight, when I found a videotape named "The Melodious Magic of Mozart" in one of the unpacked boxes, and even though it's probably been at least 5 years since I have watched an actual video tape, I decided to go ahead and put it in. (after assembling the whole VCR thing - did you know those things can hook up with cables?

Quick opinions:
Wow, we were *really* good for a college choir. I mean it. REALLY good. I have now done the Mozart Requiem at least 4 more times, and this choir was as good or better(!) than any other choir I've sung it with.

Also: (and this was unexpected) I saw SO MANY people who meant SO MUCH to me back then. It was probably filmed at our Winter concert in 1994, right before Spring Break. so: 11 years ago. And right from the top of my head, without having made a list, I remember seeing:

Blast from the past herself, Suzi Hill - standing right behind me.
Heather Hoenes (long blond Heather)
Cammie & Eric - must have graduated by then, but always greg's favorites
Sharon (lefty)
Heather (righty)
Edward (He and heather named son after me. Yay, them!)
Trisha Hinman - EverBabe's first roommate. And the reason I'm a civil Engineer.
Jodi Simpson (sigh) those sally jesse glasses were awful... (but hey, i was wearing them too!)
Lenny Ortiz - think he and beth live in Iowa. Or a Dakota. Or something.
Beth Cunningham - left her in the car once. EverBabe remembers...
Dylan Oxford (emotes MORE than me - if that's Possible)
MURPHY - hasn't aged a frickin day in 20 years.
Grant - speaking of baby faces - one of the first people to tell me I was gay.
June (if memory serves, she had actually come back from Cary, NC for this concert)
Chris Riggins - looks like a baby, but I guess we all did.)
Beth O - we all know what happened with this one.
Ben - still friends with A. to this day.
Brianna B - Very pretty in an elegant way.
Bobbilyn Todd- LOVED saying her name. BOBBI-lynBOBBOBBOBBOBBOBBiLYNtodd
Sarah Chapman - had a crush on her in the day.{Edtor: didn't you have crushes on 95% of the girls on this list, Sean? And 25% of the guys?} [SK- shh! that's a secret.. don't scare the straights]
Bryce (i've got a funny story about him i can tell you later.)
Ryan Fuller (saw him last year - bastard looks the same, or better. (grin))
Bill Hayden (with the beard)
Mike Mayer - his hair looks technicolor red in the video
Katie W- last I heard, she was a forensic engineer
Wee Lee Green - didn't call her that in the day, altho I am not sure why.
Kathy Nash, bopping along to the Queen of the Night Aria

And of course, Greg and Sue.

Wow. I mean it. It makes me want to have a reunion party. Maybe I should get a house, and throw something together. Oh, wait. Hmm. Maybe I'll do something the week of the farewell to Greg thing. Maybe.

This next cartoon is specifically for the people I geek at tabletop games with.

You remember that time that
this happened in that game?

That was pretty cool.
Everbabe & I were reminiscing about the good old days last night.
As she & SuperMark basically furnished my house, I offered to pick up dinner on the way over. Basically to "put it on the bike," as it were. Where that expression came from is actually a pretty funny story.
Years ago, while in college, I had a friend (we'll call him Dug to protect his identity.) Dug & I seemed to be more like brothers than friends, with all the angst and stuff. I can tell you more later, if you're interested.
Anyhoo, he had brought a bike down to Tech, and decided he didn't want to take it back up to Ohio at the end of the school year. He gave me pretty good price on it (I can't remember if it was 25 or 50 dollars - still, not a bad price for a 10 speed.)
The first time that we went out to lunch after that (my guess as to where? ChinaTech,) Dug hadn't brought enough cash, so he said "Can you spot me? Put it on the bike."
And so I did, thinking to myself, "self, this isn't that bad of a deal. a little more than i was expecting, but - whateva." And we continued along our way, happy as clams.
Until ANOTHER time we went out to eat. "Put it on the bike." And again. "Put it on the bike." And *again*. "Put it on the bike." (In retrospect, it probably couldn't have happened more than 3-4 times.) But this was only the seed for the funny story. Really... it's coming... wait for it.)
It became a bone of contention between us- you've heard of the white elephant in the room no one talks about? Well, this bike grew larger than any elephant I've seen in the zoo. In normalized 2000 dollars, the bike ended up costing approximately 1.3 million lire. (J'skiddin.) But still- we had our share of arguments about it. And then we grew up.
Fast forward 6 years or so. We've graduated, and have gone out to dinner with Everbabe et al. And I didn't have exact change. And I said, "Eh, put it on the bike." And Dug jumped across the table at me throat. All things considered, it would probably win the BiggestReaction vs. SmallestProvocation Award for 1997. We eventually patched things up, and went on our way. What brought that up? I think someone must have photographed our uber-rational 'conversation.' http://www.foundmagazine.com/fotw/082204.html
Everbabe - feel free to correct any mistakes/omissions.

Wanted to fwd on a letter from my ex-homeowner's association. Remember, A. still lives there, so it's interesting. Really. No matter what you think. {grin} To give her some level of privacy, I've replaced the name of the condominium complex with CONDO.

March 17, 2005

I am sure everyone is aware of all the recent activity at CONDO.

On Friday, March 11, 2005, the police were investigating any locations that Mr. Nichols had ties. The news media also had that information. These news teams have been inside the gates and also set up across the street over the past week.

Brian Nichols was a tenant at CONDO for a period of time. He rented a condominium unit here. He has not lived here since last August.

The Board was aware at that time that he had been involved in a domestic incident with his girlfriend. That incident occurred at a location outside of CONDO. We had no information that indicated that he might be a threat to our homeowners. The condominium he occupied has been vacant since that time, until it was re-rented on March 01, 2005.

Mr. Nichols surrendered to police on Saturday, March 12, 2005. I do not expect that we will see any more police presence at CONDO; however there have been a few local news teams here over the past few days.

CONDO is PRIVATE PROPERTY and the news media is not permitted to come onto our property without permission from a homeowner. If you see any television or newspaper reporters inside CONDO’s gates, please stop and ask them to leave. We do not have onsite management or a security guard. It is every homeowner’s responsibility to protect our community. Once they have been asked to leave they MUST do so, I spoke at length with our attorney about this issue. The media is aware that they are required to leave once they have been asked.

Last week, several news organizations also brought camera crews and reporters and set up at the office building across the street. Several homeowners were approached and asked to provide information and/or offer their thoughts on the incident. I would encourage homeowners to refrain from speaking with the media in the future. These interviews only show CONDO in a negative light. Some statements were made by homeowners that were incorrect. One reporter was told that Mr. Nichols once had a machine gun here. This was not true. Several homeowners saw that report and were extremely upset. These reports give the public the perception that CONDO is un-safe. We have all invested a lot of time and money working to make CONDO a community we can be proud of. Negative publicity is harmful to your property value.

In my opinion, this guy makes a lot of good points. Local (and some national) news can act a little immaturely from time to time, all for the headline de' jour. Hope you find it interesting.

Two quick things:

Topic The First
Got the proverbial 'bolt-from-the-blue' the other day when a cute girl from Tech gave me a ring. (or at least she {ping}ed me.) I then realized it's been close to 10 years since we had really spoken - how weird is THAT? We'll try to keep it a little more frequently. We chatted on the phone for about an hour & a half, and caught up. One funny thing- when I told her about A. (9 year relationships tend to come up when people ask you what you've been doing for the past 10 years) she said "Oh yeah... I've got you beat. Remember LoserBoy(Tm)? We recently ended our own long-term thing."

"Sure, I remember LoserBoy...." I said, glad we were on the phone and the puzzled look wasn't going through the line. But then, as we continued talking, and I thought about it, I realized I *did* remember him. Or at least the existence of a LoserBoy(tm), who (correctly or not) I remembered naming as such. Or at least was there for the inception of the name. Or (and this is the most likely chain of events) I confabulated the whole thing. But I tell you this: the *way* she said "LoserBoy(tm)gave me treMENdous deja vous. So, here is a table of the odds of the possiblities.

I came up with the name LoserBoy 30%
Was there for the naming ceremony 30%
Confabulated the whole thing 5%
Already named before my involvement the rest%

Topic The Second:
My grandfather was at Oak Ridge during WWII, and handled raw uranium. He died in 1991 of cancer, but was really the reason that I became an engineer and went to Georgia Tech. I found this website today that was interesting, and will update you all with
Link to Children of the Manhattan Project Website

Tuesday, March 15, 2005

Just wanted to (quickly) point out a little synchronicity. In 1995 Everbabe & Markie lived in the same apartment complex as Richard Jewell. We discovered this when the men in suits were walking through her backyard on day when we were on the phone. (She rudely hung up on me, just to talk to the New York Times - but that's neither here nor there.) In case you don't remember, Richard Jewell was the hero of the Centennial Park bombing, then the villian, and now is more of a tragic hero, falsely accused, A-Team type of guy. You may or may not remember that I basically lived with the two of them for *years* before I *actually* lived with the two of them; this will prove interesting later. There are other good stories with respect to that, including "Kitchen - Tools?", that I'll tell you later, if you are nice. But that's not what I am telling you about today.

Nope, on Friday of last week, a crazy guy got a gun at his trial at the Fulton County courthouse, shot the judge and court reporter, killed another deputy in his flight, pistol-whipped an AJC reporter, and basically Grand Theft Auto'd his way around town for 24 hours, during which time he only(!) killed one more federal agent. Why bring this up, you ask?

He apparently had the condo right across the pool from A & I. Like, we could see into his place. (He had good decorating taste, interestingly.) A is mad because she thinks it might make it harder to sell her place. I'm just waiting for number 3 (don't these things always happen in threes?) I'm curious what intrigue will occur somewhere in Terramont....

-> BirthdayTwin - "Just In Time Not To Carry The BigScreen." Cleverness Recognition
-> Robynn - "Brought my own gloves, outta my way" Award, closely related to Suze's "I worked a handtruck for 7 years" Medal of Bravery.
-> Red - "What do you mean, all the boxes have been moved? I just got here!" Award.
-> Justin - "I just showed up at the storage unit to drop off my OWN crap, not help you carry YOURS." Wrong Place, Wrong Time Commendation.
-> Everbabe, SeanJr, and Markie - "Without you, Sean would have no furniture." Acclamation. Their downsizing proved to be my yay-sizing.

-> Finally, and MOST importantly - my DM DC, without whom the BigScreen would now be
laying (on its side) in the driveway. Traction and good footing, my friend, have rarely proved so useful.

-> As well, A (yes, *that* A) was very helpful. I'm not sure if she was helpful only to be helpful, or merely to get my crap the heck out of her house. {grin}(Just kidding, A.) On the plus side for her: a very nice couple asked if she was moving, and then even called back the next day. So: she might be able to escape from her reverse commute. Which makes her happy - no, ECSTATIC.

Everything worked *exceedingly* well, with my matrix of helper's proving useful as we bounced from house to house to storage unit to house. The big screen tried to come out of the truck a little faster than I would have liked, but all in all: a BEAUTIFUL, rainy, cold, drizzly, slippery, FINAL move day.

Quick update.

Jermy & Emily's wedding in Ft Lauderdale was fanTAStic. I had a ball, the weather was perfect, and they called me "The Hand Dancer." (I'll pretend not to know why)Oh yes: I got to see RogerDodger! (if not the first of the many bosses I have driven to other companies, by far my favorite.) Yay, Roger! You'll get a better update on that later in the week. I guarantee.

Closing on the house (79% chance) Wednesday of next week. % chance is because of the inherent uncertainty involved in something so big & clumsy. (Mortgage, not me.... thanks anyway, Brent)

Song I just listened to: Lyle Lovett, Her First Mistake. . I *love* this song. Its combination of clever words and lyrical music make it one of my top 10 pieces of music.

Followed by, Indigo Girls, Touch Me Fall.
FOLLOWED BY: Handel's Messiah, And He Shall Purify.

FOLLOWED BY: Day by Day, from Godspell! (nice random match, ITunes) (PS: Mom, these are links if you want to listen to samples of what I was listening to.)

Wow, it reminds me how much I like the combination of MP3's and ITunes Party Shuffle Feature. I better publish right NOW so that i can catch up with ITunes... (I was gonna stop after Lyle, but all this cool stuff started coming on.)

A few things. Just had the inspection done on my (new) prospective house done today. Things look good, and are moving right along. Yay!

In other news; This comic reminds me of Dug... ah, Dug. He would cry "Tat" and let loose the dogs of war at the slightest provocation. On the other hand, Everbabe does the same thing... and her memory is by far the best. (Perhaps that comes with being a lay-dee?) Mom, this sentence is a link.

The best part of the whole comic is that it is based upon Die Siedler, or the "WheatbrickSheep" game, as my friends call it.

OK, for those of you who have done a mortgage before, the sheer volume of paperwork is proabably not a surprise. However, one piece of information that my broker wanted seemed... excessive?

-2003 and 2004 W2's
-payroll check stubs for one full month of income
-two months worth of your bank statements, consecutive months with all the pages, for the most recent 2 months
-the name of your second grade school teacher
-a 401K statement if you have it
-copy of the contract
-check for 275.00 for the appraisal fee
Seriously: a copy of the contract? How am I supposed to come up with that!?

Just found this on a website... i'll link it for you.

Eysenck's Test Results
Extraversion (72%) high which suggests you are overly talkative, outgoing, sociable and interacting at the expense too often of developing your own individual interests and internally based identity.
Neuroticism (31%) moderately low which suggests you are relaxed, calm, secure, and optimistic.
Psychoticism (46%) medium medium which suggests you are moderately self interested, willful, and difficult, while still respecting the well being of others.

Just wanted to update you guys with the two houses I'm thinking about.

First: Older house. Current bachelor pad. Smells a little too much like chlorine: Hot tub, though {grin}

Second: Owned by some central Europeans. Hot. Accidental pool in the backyard. interesting...

haven't decided one way or the other.... Comment away with your suggestions!

Reading online comics. This one is not safe for work, but something very similar happened to me.

Substitute "bombing at a gay club" for "gay marriage ban" & "going to a coffee shop in Midtown" for "helping a friend out of a gay bar", and you have the time that I was background at a gay bookstore on CNN.

Just wanted to CC: you guys a letter I sent to management at a local radio station.

I just wanted to drop you a line to tell you that I have been a listener to your station for a number of years. With the exception of Dave Ramsey on 920 AM, WSB 750 AM is the only AM station I listen to in the Atlanta area. I find that I agree with Boortz about 55% percent of the time, Hannity about 20%, and look at Clark Howard as a fun, empathetic, helpful radio personality. Royal Marshall's show is always the most informative about local issues, and, perhaps with no Braves games to worry about, will be able to be scheduled regularly on weekday evenings.

However, every single time that I turn on my radio and hear the Michael Savage show, I immediately change the station. I find Savage's comments to be both loathsome and vile, and I find it extremely unlikely that I would ever visit a sponsor of one of his shows.

I have no idea whether my opinion is in the majority here in Atlanta; I simply wanted to tell you how I felt about the situation. I hopefully await the time I am able to listen to WSB radio in the evening once more.

(was loathsome too strong? Judge for yourself.)
I really hope this link stops working.

This is a wow type moment, a high school student making the shot of a lifetime. Why do I feature him on my site? His high school is where my brother went to college. Or somesuch.

RICHMOND, Va. It was an impossible shot, but Jordan Snipes sank it.

The Virginia high school basketball player hurled the ball 92 feet at the buzzer last night and it dropped cleanly through the hoop, giving his Guilford Quakers their 91-to-89 win over Randolph-Macon in overtime.

An opposing player had hit the first of two free throws to give Randolph-Macon an 89-to-88 lead. His coach told him to miss the second free throw.

Snipes got the rebound, turned and threw the ball 92 feet through the basket. He finished the game with 34 points -- including the three-point shot that's being shown on T-V around the country.

Two interesting things from last week.

Number one: I took my (rolled) change into the bank to turn it into real money. I wasn't really paying much attention, so imagine my surprise when it turned into $100.00. Even. That was sorta fun. That was with pennys, nickels, dimes, and (of course) quarters, but still a nice way to end up with a hundred dollar bill. I went ahead and wrote "Change" on it, and put it in my saftey deposit box. Poof: an extra hundred dollar emergency fund!

Number two: My diet. A little more than a week ago I started my own version of a modified Atkins/South Beach (less than 20 grams of carbs a day.) FYI: One slice of normal white bread = 23 grams of carbs = crap. Too many!!!) I am supposedly in the induction phase now (starting to lose weight, yada yada) So, Friday, after a week of good times, (only 2 beers that week!) I decided to weigh myself to see how much weight I had lost. According to the scale downstairs at the gym, I weigh between 185 and 210 pounds. I think one thing is clear: time to get a new scale.

Just wanted to do a quick update from bee-u-tiful Southern Illinois, when the temp yesterday morning was 14 degrees, and there was 3-6 inches of ice on the pond.

Now would be a terrible time for me to go to prison. Avtually, I can't think of a *great* time to go to prison... but I digress. With the cold weather and the wind, my lips are a little chapped and bright red; I'm afraid the last thing that I would hear at night would be "you sure do have a pretty mouth, boy..."

And In Other News: My mother, freshly back from Hawaii, told me her stereo wasn't working, and so she needed to take it to Hooters. 'Hooters?', I asked? "Something like that", she replied. , Puh-Tay-Toe, Puh-Tah-Toe; Hoo-ters, Twee-ters.

Just wanted to do a quick shout-out to my main man, Borak!

Sorry about that near death thing, buddy...

"And may George W. Bush drink the blood of every man, woman and child in Iraq."
My uncle Mo lives in Nashville, and sent this description of halftime at a women's basketball game this past weekend. We'll call this episode: "The one with the battle of the team mascots."

...Then the annoucer blares over the sound system

"Its time for the Battle of the Mascots!!!!!!!!!!!!! On the Black team we have SnowBird from channel 4 and the Weather Hound from Channel 5."

Out from the side waddles Snowbird and the big dog onto the court.

"Joining them we have the First Tennessee Dollar working for you
and the Eat more Chicken Cow from Chick Filet"

Onto the court waddles the guy in a dollar bill and the 9 foot cow.

"Joining them we have Fang from the Predators"

Out runs Fang onto the court.

"On the gold team we have T-Rex from the Titans and the mascot from the
Sounds"

Out runs T-Rex and a Cougar.

They ended up getting the yellow pages and a couple more and then they started playing basketball.

Well it was obvious from the start that the black team couldn't run much less bend over to pick a basketball up and the gold team was having a field day.

Finally Fang breaks loose with the basketball and races down to the other end of the court. Only T-rex stands between him and the goal. Fang leaps high in the air and throws the ball as hard as he can...

WHAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ball catches T-rex right between the eyes!!!!!!!!!!! He goes down like a ton of bricks!!

The games breaks into bedlam after that. Mascot heads are rolling over the court as the game evolves into a strange game of dodgeball and revenge.

I don't understand why this wasn't picked up by CNN. SuperMark: do you know?
I've talked a little bit about politics in the past, but not so much as to bore you, my imaginary readers. However, one thing that really chaps my hide is hypocrisy; you show me a sanctimonious right-wing preacher/talk show host/guardian of morals, and I'll show you somebody who's just as human as the rest of us. From Jimmy Swaggert's hooker in a sleazy motel, to Rush's addiction to pain pills, to Bill Bennett's gambling 'problem'; Human. But they still manage to come out of it 'holier-than-thou.' Pisses me off to no end.

So: the thing i've been hearing for MONTHS, now: The UN is evil. UN is Satan. UN's Iraqi Oil-For-Food program was 'soooooooo' corrupt. (Definitely heard Boortz, Rush, and Hannity bitching about this one.) How much do you bet that you won't hear a damn thing about this story?

US ignored warning on Iraqi oil smuggling
So: I've moved out of A's house one week ago tonight, at least to the point of having a new place to lay my head at night, and brush my teeth. My friend (we'll call her Zelda) is recently single herself, so this might be interesting. But not in that way. I know that *I'm* not ready for dating seriously, and I'm pretty sure that moving in would count as a pretty serious dating scenario. All indications are that she's in the same way (too soon, etc, etc) Everything should be good on that front.

Things are weird... especially as it's A's birthday today. IAfter thinking about it long and hard, I decided to call and leave a Happy Birthday Song on her machine. I've cleaned out most of my stuff from her place (except for emptying the closet, my grandfather's chair, my bed, a round table, a rectangular table, the three legged table, my computer desk, my TV, my BIG SCREEN TV, my two bookshelves... and the kitty litter pan. (anybody but me notice a lot of tables in that list?)

Every now and then it hits me: 9 years is a long time to define yourself using someone else. I guess I'll have to learn to define myself from now on.

Cue end depressing monologue. Happy music time: I really like this group. Sorry if I've told you about them before, but heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Eddie.

This link is purely for Everbabe's benefit. Others, of course, are welcome to visit.

Elegy for a humorist.

And I'm *not* making this up.

{edited on 1/13/05... Replaced Eulogy with Elegy} - better, cause he's not. dead. yet.
Occasionally I'll feel as though I've had a bad day. (we all do, don't we?) It's good to be reminded that things could always be worse.

I headed off to lunch today, (an indian buffet... YUM!) As I drove through the parking lot, an indian guy, about mid 20's, gave me a wave from inside his car. "How nice," i thought to myself. So... I waved back to him. He waved to me again. "How... nice?" I waved back, a little less friendly.

He waved again. 'Who is this guy', I wondered. I waved, trying to make it clear through my steely glare that this back and forth could not continue. He then held up a set of jumper cables with a hopeful look. Ah... THAT'S the game. So: I jumped him off. Er. I jumped his *car* off. Yes, yes I did.

And then went inside, had lunch, and read this book. (Kage Baker writes a mean set of stories about the combo of immortality and time travel. More on that later.) Indian Buffet = Yummy.

I then left the restaurant, and walked to my car. "Wait," (I said to myself,) "who's that unfortunate fellow trying to unlock his car with a coat-hanger? Surely it couldn't be Mr Friendly-Pants?"

Unfortunately for him, it was. On the upside, his car seemed to be running just fine.
So I did what anyone in that situation would do: said "Good luck!" and drove back to training. {grin}

On the 2 month anniversary of the most recent breakup in my life, i recieved an interesting email from a co-worker.
Hey Sean! M. and I need some pictures for a presentation we are doing, and wondered if you’d be willing to help us out. We’re looking for a good sport to help us illustrate a “don’t” of business attire, and I’m only asking because I know you’re a good sport, not because we think you fit this category ... What we need is a “model” wearing a rumbled, older pair of khakis and a dress coat. If the shoes were scuffed, that would also be a nice touch. Would you be willing to help us out? ...

Always a good sign when your coworkers immediately think of you as a {Business Dress: DON'T!}

Well, readers of my earlier missives will be happy to know that Hardee's has a new advertisement line.

It's somehow more.... girthy than the earlier ones.

Wednesday, January 05, 2005

Alrighty, this is pretty funny.

I've been signed up for training for AutoCAD. So, yesterday, the training fellow went over the difference between Paper Space and Model Space. And how to use layers. And draw lines. And use the mouse. And use the 'special' cup holder that comes with any desktop computer. (Maybe I exaggerate a teensy bit.)

As to why I find this amusing, it might help if you know that I have been working in AutoCAD for over 10 years, and may have seen this stuff before.

On the other hand, I am picking up a trick or two regarding some additions to the program that are pretty cool.

On the other other hand, he just said "I always get this wrong sometimes." Heh.

Howdy!

Long time no talk! My vacation with various 'hot' female cousins has been going swimmingly so far. Only downside so far: unable to keep up with you, my faithful reader. Oh well: I've been kickin it, old skool, by writing down my thoughts on (gasp!) PAPER, whenever i've had a chance. We may keep this up in the future, depending upon positive response; just let me know if you like this feature, and I'll take it into consideration.

So, what have I been up to? The weekend before Christmas, had a ball at a White Elephant Gift Exchange at K.'s house. She throws a mean party, going to depths that I wouldn't have considered. Homemade eggnog, cheesy Christmas specials from the early 80's (complete with wonderfully TERRIBLE commercials for Sears and Strawberry Shortcake), and a green/red Christmas food motif should give you an idea as to how much thought she puts into these things.

But the real fun arose with the Gift Exchange. We go the "Most Useless Thing Ever" route for our gifts. Last year's highlights were a framed copy of the Declaration of Independence, and my favorite, a picture frame with 4(!) high school photos of the giver. {Hah!} That nearly made me wet myself, let me tell you.

MP3 update: Hey Little Man, Eddie from Ohio.

Anyhoo: this year, I brought two gifts. Number 1: one of those sample of countertop material that you might get when you update your house. Sorta like paint swatches... but a) Formica(Tm), and b) something that you would use if you were a company. Red's friend V. ended up with that, and, interestingly, she both knew the technical name for these thingys, *and* could use them in her job. It was a 'luck of the draw' thing.

The second thing I brought was something that I had ALWAYS wanted to buy at Costco or Sam's. Well, if not always, at least for about 15 years, which is as close to always as I get. Unlike many of the oversized snak packs I've ended up with over the years (such as the 12 pack of Vienna Weiner cans I bought one day while shopping hungry), I could never convince myself in my wildest dreams that I would be able to use it. Therefore, the White Elephant gift exchange was my best friend, *finally* coming up with a reason for purchase. What was this paragon of uselessness, you ask?

A 4 lb can of tuna.

Charley was indeed sorry. {grin}

I then went to Houston, to visit my paternal cousins, many of whom I had only seen 4-5 times in the past decade. I had a great time, and merely wanted to mention a couple of things, to get your interest piqued for future updates.

-Confetti in bellybutton
-Liza "Cutest thing"
-The Handsomes at Christmas
-Missed Whattaburger
-Cuz G. very successful with laydeez
-Narced on T.
-(Chose not to get high, not to get high, not to get high.)
-Holly = Brigid
-Everbabe call = highlight of day
-Uncle - PO'ed at gas station
-Better names lead to better hair?!?
-Finally, I'm now on a quest to find other, more distantly related cousins, reconnect. (Starting with K?)

I mean, seriously... if, after leaving a 9 year relationship isn't the time to reflect and reconnect with your history, I really don't know when is!

That's all for now... I leave you, invisible audience, with the request that you take it easy tonight.... we need you back after the New Year!

Monday, December 20, 2004

Alrighty...

I'm off to Houston, to see that half of the family that I'm a little less close to. Wish my luck, o' invisible audience!

Peace out, and see you in '05!

Man, getting ready to leave town for two weeks sux0r.

On the other hand, I have (re?)discovered how funny it is that Cartman-isms are working their way into "real life."

In the review for a game I saw online, a reviewer described the game as "hella cool."

It's a hella lame blog that doesn't include a definition of hella.

ITunes: Norah Jones, "Don't Know Why."
A few nights ago (12/8) there was a waitress in Middleofnowhere/Southern Illinois, who was the spitting image of Ann, my cheerleader friend from freshman year.

That was a good time for me. There were millions of women, even at Ga Tech. Well, not really... the ratio of men to women was at least 3:1... but somehow, i didn't have to worry about that.

Not because i was any great catch, or anything... in fact, it would be at least a yar before i would start dating anyone seriously. But I had two things going for me in the laydeez category.

1) I spent a lot of time in the GaTech Chorale. As there are usually statistically 2 times the women who want to sing in almost any group, the M/W ratio in Chorale asymptotically approached 1:1. (And, in fact, that's the pool I pulled each of my future long term dating prospects from. Sneaky, Sean.)

2) After my very first night singing in Chorale, I ended up (through a wild and wooly path, to be told later (if you ask nicely) meeting J (now known as Everbabe.) We immediately hit it off (both new freshmen with a love for Robert Heinlien) and, (through ANOTHER bumpy ride... what can I say? We were freshmen...) ended up best of friends.

3) Not dating, mind you. Just friends. (i still have the note to prove it.) {see? *Notes.* *Obviously* a freshman.) But really close friends. Close enough that I started spending the night in her room. A LOT.

4) Which led me to meet quite a few of her neighbors. Segregated dormitories in those days. (ah, the prudish early 90's) One of whom: Ann.

My relationship with Ann (purely platonic, of course) lasted a few years, and we were little more than nodding acquaintances. Ah, but that little more (usually a smile) was all I needed to get that extra little lift in my shoes whenever we bumped into each other. Which is why it was so nice to be reminded of her by this waitress.

It's amazing that something as small as a similar smile can take you back in time over a decade. Back when life was good, and you weren't stuck on a jobsite in Southern Illinois.

Js'kiddin.
OK;

This link is to a story by Sean Kilpatrick.

NOT me. This person, who has written a very strange story, is NOT ME.

But here's the link anyway.

Couple of interesting links. A client on the phone today, gnashing her teeth about the overly PC nature of America, sent a link to a Vonnegut short story.
Harrison something-or-other. Very quick read, and even more scathing today than when first published over 40 years ago. (!)

Then an nice snarky quote from a Slate reader, continuing the LeGuin thread.
It reminded me of my favorite critical slam against a movie: "The Scarlet Letter is 'freely adapted' from Hawthorne's novel in the same sense that methane is freely adapted from cows."

Heh.

Wowza... I was really excited about Earthsea, on SciFi. They had done a more than reasonable job with Dune, leaving me apprehensive but hopeful for this miniseries dealing with one of my favorite childhood memories.

Watched about 45 minutes last night. Was a little uncomfortable with some of the portayals (protagonist was a hell of a lot more whiny/"UncleOwennnnnnnn" than I remembered, but whatever.) I was going to watch the rest tonight.

Then today, I found a critic who agreed with me. Interestingly, that critic was URSALA K LEGUIN. The AUTHOR of the books was displeased with it.

On Tuesday night, the Sci Fi Channel aired its final installment of Legend of Earthsea, the miniseries based—loosely, as it turns out—on my Earthsea books. The books, A Wizard of Earthsea and The Tombs of Atuan, which were published more than 30 years ago, are about two young people finding out what their power, their freedom, and their responsibilities are. I don't know what the film is about.

Heh. Snarky authors. Gotta Love 'em.
Just wanted to throw up a link to the aforementioned one-year-old's webjournal. He's pretty darn hip. Well, for a one-year-old.

hip, indeed

Okay, weird question for you. Have you ever picked up the phone, dialed somebody, and then forgotten exactly what was going on? This just happened to me, and let me tell you: it's just about the biggest way to feel like an idiot without actually causeing property damage. (Example of the previous would have to be the 'Don't Hit Dug's Car' story, which i'll have to tell you later.)

This just happened to me. I was sitting in a Hardee's having lunch (more on that later) and decided i really liked the chicken sandwich. (oh... i guess it must be later already) [that's right] (well.... get on with your story) [alright... if you stop interrupting.] (i'll be quiet as a churchmouse) ANYhoo: Chicken sandwich. Really good. So: I called J. (who I might start calling Everbabe, from the massive way she plays MMOPRG's.) And then I turned down my mp3 player. And then I ate a fry. And then I had other bite of my sandwich, and continued typing up my reports for work. And then she answered. And then I had another fry. And the--- "Ummm.,..... Hello?" Running through MY head: {crap - who is this? why did she just call me? wait... that doesn't sound right... omigod- i called HER... i should probably say SOMETHING..... or, i could just hang up.... but i must have called for SOME reason.... these fries are pretty good.... FOCUS, man! stick with the basics... } ".....Hello." Believe it or not, the conversation went downhill from there. {grin}

Back to my REAL point for this update. Hardee's chicken sandwich: Surprisingly good. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Burger King Original Chicken Sandwich 4 out of 5
Loses points for excessive mayo – still one of the best, though.

Arby's Chicken Sandwich 4 out of 5
This one has a lot of nostalgia for me, and takes back to my time wasted after school.

Chic-Fil-A Chicken Sandwich 4.5 out of 5
Still at the top of the heap. Peanut oil, i think, gives it it’s special zing.

Hardee's Chicken Sandwich 4.5 out of 5
Very large, very flat, very good.

Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich 8.5 out of 5
The normal doesn’t approach this ‘un.

McDonalds Chicken Sandwich ?? out of 10
I'm not even sure what this tastes like. The crispy chicken, however, is like
what you used to get at middle school lunch.
